 Luke Fickell is an American football coach and former player. Also, he currently serves as the football head coach at the University of Cincinnati.

Early Life

Luke Joseph Fickell, a former American football player, and professional coach was born in Columbus, Ohio, on August 18, 1973.

In addition, he began his playing career there in 1992 after graduating from DeSales High School. After redshirting for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 1992, Fickell had a significant role on the defense. Also, he started 50 consecutive games at nose guard from 1993 to 1996, breaking a school record. 

Further, Fickell graduated from Ohio State and signed as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints in 1997. However, Fickell was ultimately let go by the team after tearing his ACL and missing the remainder of the season due to injury.

After a brief stint in the NFL, Luke Fickell joined John Cooper’s coaching staff at Ohio State as a graduate assistant in 1999. Fickell was hired by the University of Akron in 2000 to serve as the defensive line coach. Two years later, Fickell returned to Ohio State to work as the special team coordinator for second-year head coach Jim Tressel.

After taking over as the linebackers coach in 2004, Fickell expanded his scope of duties by adding the post of co-defensive coordinator 2005. So when the AFCA recognized him as “Assistant Coach of the Year” in 2010, he joined the ranks of Buckeyes coaches Carroll Widdoes, Woody Hayes, Earle Bruce, and Jim Tressel.

In addition, he was elevated to assistant head coach and would have taken over as head coach during Jim Tressel’s five-game suspension to start the 2011 campaign. However, Tressel resigned on May 30, 2011, and Fickell was named head coach due to an NCAA inquiry. In the 2012 Gator Bowl, Fickell coached the Ohio State Buckeyes against Meyer’s previous team, the Florida Gators.

Also, on December 10, 2016, Fickell succeeded Tommy Tuberville as the 39th head coach of the University of Cincinnati.
